Texas Winds Musical Outreach takes live music out of the concert hall and brings it directly to people who otherwise have little opportunity to experience it. Their musicians perform over 1,400 free concerts annually, reaching 80,000 people, from nursing home residents and hospital patients to disadvantaged children.
I’ve been working with the Executive Director at Texas Winds for nearly 6 years. Like many non-profit organizations, they have big dreams and limited resources. When we met, concerts and donations were being managed with an old FileMaker database built by a previous developer, but the design was inefficient and no longer supported the direction Texas Winds was heading. They needed the tools they already had to work better.
After a discovery phase, we identified which areas of the database were in good shape, and others that would need to be rebuilt. New tables were created for Foundations, Gifts, Locations, Ensembles, Musicians, and the scheduling and reporting tools were improved dramatically. These improvements allow Texas Winds to manage 400 additional concerts a year — reaching thousands more in need — without hiring any additional staff. None. With additional time to focus on fundraising, Texas Winds donations and gifts have increased 25%.
After addressing their FileMaker needs, we shifted focus to moderinzing the Texas Winds website. Their previous site had been coded by hand and wasn’t responsive on mobile devices. A new site was built with WordPress, providing a better mobile experience, connectivity to social networks, and dramatically simplifying the publishing of new content.
